Banda Aceh: The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has prioritized the restoration of road networks and public service infrastructure as part of post-disaster recovery efforts in several areas of Aceh following recent flooding.
“This effort is aimed at reopening transportation routes, restoring logistics distribution, and ensuring access to basic public services that were disrupted by the floods,” said Tommy Permadhi, head of the Aceh Agency for Buildings, Infrastructure and Regional Planning (BPBPK), on Tuesday, quoted from Antara, Wednesday 7 January 2026.
Permadhi said cleanup operations have been carried out along major roads in Rantau sub-district, including Alur Manis, Kebun Rantau, Kampung Durian, Bukit Tempurung, and several surrounding villages.
The work has focused on clearing mud and debris left by floodwaters to restore road functionality and ensure safe access for residents and emergency services.
In parallel, environmental rehabilitation is being conducted through a labor-intensive program involving approximately 100 local residents. The initiative is intended not only to accelerate infrastructure recovery but also to provide immediate economic support for communities affected by the disaster.
“Work has begun in residential areas impacted by the floods, including access routes to critical facilities such as the Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM), the Final Disposal Site (TPA), and the Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (IPLT). These access points are prioritized for immediate restoration,” Permadhi said.
He added that the ministry is still awaiting official damage assessment data and a regent’s decree identifying affected residential zones, particularly to distinguish areas eligible for recovery from those designated for relocation.
“This decree is crucial to ensure recovery efforts are accurately targeted and aligned with regional policies,” he said.
Permadhi noted that under its mandate, the Directorate General of Human Settlements cannot handle all cleanup operations within residential areas.
“Our responsibility is focused on transporting mud and debris from roadsides to disposal sites. The cleaning of public facilities within residential neighborhoods falls under the authority of the Directorate General of Strategic Infrastructure,” he explained.
Meanwhile, state-owned construction firm PT Adhi Karya continues efforts to clean and normalize drainage channels to prevent waterlogging and reduce the risk of further flooding in affected areas.
