Indonesia Monitors Demonstrations in Iran and Prepares Contingency Plans for Indonesian Citizens

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia said it continues to monitor the condition of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Iran amid a wave of demonstrations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also prepared a contingency plan to anticipate if the situation worsens.

“Looking closely at the development of the situation in Iran, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tehran is closely monitoring the security situation and the condition of Indonesian citizens in Iran,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday (12/1/2026).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that, based on the communication of  Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Tehran with the Indonesian citizens in different regions of Iran, the cities of the main nodes of the Indonesian citizens community, such as Qom and Isfahan, have relatively not experienced significant security disruptions. Indonesian citizens in Iran are mostly in the status of students or students in various educational institutions in Iran, especially in Qom City.

“Based on KBRI's assessment and taking into account the conditions on the ground as of January 12, 2026, there is currently no need for evacuation. Nevertheless, preparations in anticipation of the escalation of the security situation according to the contingency plan continue to be carried out,” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, KBRI Tehran has urged all NGOs in Iran to always increase vigilance, monitor the development of the situation through official sources of information, avoid the location of demonstration centers and crowds, and maintain communication with KBRI Tehran. “For those who have plans to travel to Iran, it is requested to postpone the trip until the situation and security conditions are declared favorable,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Kemlu RI revealed that, in an emergency situation, WNI can immediately contact the KBRI Tehran Hotline via +98 9914668845/+98 902 466 8889 or Hotline of the WNI Protection Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the number +62 812-9007-0027. Today, Iran is facing a wave of demonstrations. People in different regions of the country took to the streets to protest against high inflation, currency depreciation, and the deteriorating economy. According to the US-based human rights group HRANA, at least 490 protesters and 48 security personnel have been killed in clashes over the past two weeks.
